DEVON GARDEN MACHINERY BLOOMS WITH SOLAR INVESTMENT

12th February 2024 By Fran Brown

From L-R – Charlotte Dommett, Steve Dommett, Alan Dommett and Jake Dommett from Devon Garden Machinery, with Eleanor Smith from Ignition.

Garden and turf-care equipment supplier, Devon Garden Machinery, has invested more than £85,000 in a new solar power system on the roof of its new premises, with help from Ignition.

The Torquay-based family business has been celebrating its 40th birthday this week.  It is a distributor for top brands such as Toro, Iseki, Honda and Husqvara, and is well-established as one of the largest robotic mower centres in the South West, serving commercial and private customers across the region.  It recently moved into a brand-new building adjacent to its previous site in Kerswell Gardens, as part of a new development featuring an Aldi store and a Costa Coffee shop.

According to owners, Steve and Charlotte Dommett, the move to the new building provided a perfect opportunity to invest in solar energy, helping to reduce the company’s carbon emissions, whilst saving on energy costs. Financed by Ignition and installed by Sun Energy, the investment includes 190 solar panels as part of a 75 kW system that will save around 13.2 tonnes of C02 per year.

Ignition provides support to SMEs by financing a wide range of assets from vehicles and machinery to business equipment and renewable energy.  This can include solar panels, wind turbines, biomass and heating systems and LED lighting. It was able to assist Devon Garden Machinery with a hire purchase agreement, spreading the cost of the solar power system and its installation into manageable monthly repayments.

Charlotte Dommett comments:

“We’re delighted to be up and running in our spacious new premises!  It has been designed to suit our needs as a growing business, with a dedicated showroom, training rooms, and much better access for moving the machines in and out.

“We were also keen to consider the environment within the building design, so have introduced a rainwater harvesting system and a recycling wash system for the wash area, as well as installing the solar power system which will significantly reduce our carbon output. We’re grateful to the team at Ignition for providing swift access to finance for the solar project and for supporting us throughout the move.”

Eleanor Smith, Ignition’s business development manager and solar specialist comments:

“It’s been fantastic to see this regional family business flourish and to assist them with this important milestone!  The new site looks amazing and has been carefully designed so that it’s perfect for Devon Garden Machinery as it expands, as well as meeting its ambitious sustainability goals.”

Solar Boost for Green Body Shop

23rd November 2023 By Fran Brown

Car body repair shop, Fix Auto Penzance, is doubling its solar power capacity with help from Ignition.  A new bank of 30kW panels has been installed on the paintshop roof, helping the company to keep energy costs down whilst continuing its ongoing commitment to operate in an environmentally responsible way.

Established in 1988, Fix Auto Penzance is a carbon neutral organisation, which has integrated environmental conservation into its operations for many years.  This includes the use of environmental paints and re-used parts, along with large-scale materials recycling across the Fix Auto UK network.  Its first solar panels were installed 12 years ago, providing an initial 30kW of power, but since then the business has grown and its energy use has increased.

Ignition provides support to SMEs by financing a wide range of assets from vehicles and machinery to business equipment and renewable energy.  This can include solar panels, wind turbines, biomass and heating systems and LED lighting.  It was able to assist Fix Auto Penzance with the purchase and installation of an additional 30kW solar energy system by Sun Energy, bringing the company’s total capacity to 60kW. The terms of the hire purchase agreement mean that costs are spread into manageable monthly repayments.

Managing Director of Fix Auto Penzance, Stuart Cameron, comments:

“In the 12 years since we first purchased solar panels, our workshop space has doubled in size and we have installed additional features such as a high-tech, robotic three-bay drying booth, a wheel refurbishment operation, and an electric vehicle charging bay – all resulting in an increase in our energy use.

“Our previous solar investment was a sound financial decision, particularly since we continue to benefit from a ‘feed-in tariff’ where we receive annual payments for energy sold back to the grid. Expanding our solar power capacity at this stage makes absolute sense, both from a financial point of view, and to further strengthen our environmentally friendly  credentials.”

Eleanor Smith, Ignition’s business development manager and solar specialist, comments:

“Stuart and his team at Fix Auto Penzance have put environmental conservation at the heart of their business for many years, winning several awards for their efforts and forging an excellent reputation amongst their customers. We were delighted to assist with the expansion of their solar power provision, which aligns with their company ethos and will provide long-term cost savings.”

Sun Shines on Green Ice-cream

4th October 2023 By Fran Brown

Roskilly’s invests in solar energy to power organic farm and ice-cream production – pictured Toby Roskilly and Eleanor Smith from Ignition

The popular Cornish organic ice-cream brand, Roskilly’s, has invested more than £200,000 in a new solar power system, with help from Ignition.

The 211.68kw system includes 500 solar panels which are situated in fields on Roskilly’s working dairy farm in St Keverne. The system will help to power the milking parlour, ice-cream production, restaurant, shop and offices, considerably reducing the company’s energy bills in the long-term and saving around 60 tonnes of CO2every year.

Ignition arranged a bespoke hire purchase finance package to cover the upfront cost of the panels and installation by supplier Ivy Solar, with affordable repayments to be made over a 6-year term.  It is anticipated that the new system will provide at least 25% of Roskilly’s energy each year.  Taking into account the company’s existing 100kw solar system, this will mean that around 37% of its annual energy will be provided by solar power.

Director, Toby Roskilly, comments:

“After 60 years as an organic dairy farm and more than 30 as an organic ice-cream manufacturer, environmental sustainability has always been at the heart of the Roskilly’s family business. We are proud to be reducing our carbon footprint, whilst continuing to provide our customers and visitors with quality products and experiences. Ignition has helped us to take this step in a way that is immediately affordable for the business and will help to protect us against rising energy costs in the future.”

Eleanor Smith, Ignition’s business development manager and solar specialist, comments:

“Roskilly’s new solar panels are an excellent addition to the business, providing significant financial and environmental benefits.  By helping the company to manage the initial investment costs, we were able to provide a win-win solution that will continue to reap rewards for both the company and the planet.”

Solar Powered Pasties

6th September 2023 By startassetfinance

Mark Norton, Managing Director of Cornish Premier Pasties with Ignition’s Eleanor Smith, Business Development Manager and solar specialist

Cornish Premier Pasties reduce CO2 emissions by over 50 tonnes a year, thanks to solar panel installation

Cornish Premier Pasties, one of Cornwall’s biggest pasty and savoury goods producers, has committed to reducing its carbon emissions by investing over £135,000 into solar power at its bakery in St Columb.

The project has been supported by Ignition, a leading UK asset finance provider based in Truro. Installed by Bristol based Solarsense, the investment includes 320 solar panels as part of a 131.2kw system, that will save over 50 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Commenting on the investment, Mark Norton, Managing Director of Cornish Premier Pasties said: “As a manufacturing business, we’re very aware of our energy consumption and carbon footprint, so for us, it was important we took steps to help protect our planet’s future. Installing our own green energy sources on the roof of our factory is one initiative that we’re undertaking to reduce our carbon footprint, in line with the business’ strategic plan. The system will provide at least 20% of the factory’s energy over the year, however on a sunny day last month, the solar panels were producing 98% of our power. Thanks to our solar panels, we can continue to commit to providing quality products to our customers, at the very best price, despite the crippling rise of energy costs.

It’s been a pleasure to work with Ignition and Solarsense – the project, which sits in line with our strategic plan to develop as a sustainable and forward-thinking food manufacturing firm, has showcased the best of southwest business partnerships and we’re incredibly thankful to those involved, for making it happen.”

Eleanor Smith, Business Development Manager and Ignition’s solar specialist, added: “I’ve known Mark professionally for more than a decade and have witnessed the exceptional growth and success of his two businesses. It has been great to work with him on this project, which is set to deliver considerable cost savings in the long-term, whilst helping to meet Cornish Premier Pasties’ aspirations to become more environmentally sustainable. By offering specialist financial packages for a range of renewable energy assets, Ignition can help companies fund sustainable solutions that are also beneficial to the bottom line.”

Cornish Premier Pasties was acquired by Mark Norton in 2020 and combined with its sister business, Prima Bakeries Ltd, the group is the fourth largest manufacturer of Cornish Pasties in the world. Employing over 60 people, the company has doubled sales in the last two years by welcoming new customers throughout the UK.

Ignition helps China Fleet Country Club invest in Solar Energy

23rd June 2022 By Katy Baker

One of the South West’s leading country clubs, China Fleet in Saltash, has invested in a Solar Photovoltaic (PV) system worth over £100,000, supplied by ZLC Energy in Liskeard, and financed through Truro-based asset finance provider, Ignition.

The China Fleet Country Club was established more than 30 years ago to provide rest and recreation facilities for Royal Navy and Royal Marine personnel and their families, and has since evolved into a contemporary family-friendly facility that is also open to members of the local community.  It comprises a championship golf course, a leisure complex, health and beauty suite, apartments, café and restaurant, and hosts conferences and events.

The impressive 165kWp array of solar panels has been installed on the roof of the main building by renewable energy installers, ZLC Energy Ltd.  It will save 95,000kg of carbon per year and will provide 16% of the Club’s energy requirements.

According to China Fleet Country Club Managing Director, Dean Bennett, the installation falls in line with the Club’s commitment to sustainability, as well as helping to reduce energy costs in the long term:

“As a company we are aiming for net zero carbon use by 2030.  The installation of the solar array will help us achieve this, and has the added benefit of substantially reducing our energy costs.  Thanks to Ignition, the outlay for the equipment and installation will be paid back gradually over 4.5 years, but with current rising energy costs we anticipate seeing a return on our investment much sooner than that – possibly within just two years.  We have definitely taken the plunge at the right time!”

He continues: “I’m particularly pleased that we have managed to take this step thanks to collaboration with two fellow Cornish companies, Ignition and ZLC Energy.  We have worked with each of them over a number of years, and would highly recommend them both for providing excellent customer service and understanding the complex needs of their customers.”

Matthew Shepherd, Managing Director at ZLC comments:

“This was a fairly complicated installation due to the challenges posed by the Club’s slate roof, but our team managed to complete the project in time, to budget, and safely. We were on site for six weeks, but were able to work discreetly with minimal disruption to the Club and its members.  We’re looking forward to working with China Fleet on their plans for further sustainable projects.”

Eleanor Smith, Business Development Manager at Ignition comments:

“It’s been a pleasure to work with China Fleet Country Club to help them realise their ambitions for environmental sustainability.  By offering specialist financial solutions for a range of renewable energy assets, we can ensure that being more sustainable is not just aspirational but also a beneficial business strategy.”
